An Interview with Wynter Larrabee by Olivia Cole
From the fog-covered shores of Nantucket Island, Massachusetts, a new generation of surfer is rising. At just 16 years old, Wynter Hero Larrabee is already making a name for himself on the East Coast and beyond. Towering at 6’2” and weighing in at 175 lbs, Wynter isn’t just another grom in the lineup — he’s a driven competitor with a vision: to make history as the first surfer in over a decade to qualify for the Championship Tour in both shortboard and longboard.
An Island Beginning
Growing up on a small island shaped by harsh winters and unpredictable surf, Wynter learned early how to adapt. Twelve years in the water have given him the instincts and resilience that can’t be taught in a textbook or a summer surf camp. For him, the ocean isn’t just a playground — it’s a proving ground.
When asked about his favorite waves, Wynter doesn’t hesitate: Ocean Beach in California for lefts, and Punta Roca in El Salvador for rights. Both breaks reflect his style — powerful, fluid, and unafraid of the unknown.
Stacking Results
Wynter has already put up results that speak louder than words. His contest résumé includes:
- 2024 NSSA Explorer Longboard East Coast Champ
- 2024 ESA Eastern Championship Junior Longboard – 2nd Place
- 2024 NSSA Open Longboard National Finalist
- 2024 NSSA Explorer Longboard National Finalist
- 2025 ESA Southeast Regional Junior Longboard Champ
- 2025 NSSA Open Longboard National Finalist
- 2025 NSSA Explorer Longboard National Finalist
These results have cemented him as a rising force, one capable of competing at both the national and international levels.
The Bigger Picture
But Wynter’s ambitions don’t stop with trophies. His long-term vision is bold: becoming an Olympian and bringing home gold in both shortboard and longboard while one day earning the title of world champion.
In the short term, he’s laser-focused on winning national titles in both disciplines and securing a spot on the USA ISA travel team. Each contest, each heat, and each wave is a step closer to that goal.
The Turbulent Connection
Wynter embodies everything Turbulent Mind stands for: riding chaos, living boldly, and embracing adventure. His determination, his willingness to push into big waves, and his vision of competing at the highest level all align with the spirit of our community. As a member of the Chaos Crew, Wynter is more than an athlete — he’s a reminder of what it means to chase big dreams with courage and resilience.
Looking Ahead
As Wynter continues to chase titles and grow into his role as both a competitor and a waterman, one thing is certain: he’s just getting started. Whether it’s carving through a heat at Jennette’s Pier, eyeing national championships, or dreaming of Olympic gold, Wynter Hero Larrabee is on a path that’s anything but ordinary.
For now, his story is still being written — one wave, one contest, and one bold step at a time.
