The Turbulent Mind Story: How Two Sisters Built a Brand Out of Chaos, Creativity, and Courage

News

Turbulent Mind didn’t begin in a boardroom, or with a business plan, or with investors lined up. It began on the other side of the world — in Bali — where twin sisters Olivia and Emmi were living, diving, and working at a marine conservation project. Their days were filled with ocean sunrises, long dives, and a kind of freedom that reshaped everything they thought they knew about life.

They fell in love with the Balinese lifestyle: the culture, the people, the flow of each day, and the small family they built along the way. But as their time there stretched on, their funds stretched thin. They needed a way to support themselves — and fast.

What started as designing tattoos for volunteers quickly evolved into something much bigger. The sisters teamed up with a local fisherman who owned a tattoo gun, and soon travelers from all over the world were wearing their original designs. People kept telling them, “You should put this on T-shirts.” And so they did.

Weekends were spent traveling across Bali to meet manufacturers, touching fabrics, sketching ideas in notebooks, and experimenting with early samples. Before they fully realized what was happening, they weren’t just designing tattoos anymore — they were designing clothing, swimwear, and the beginnings of a lifestyle brand. In what felt like the blink of an eye, Turbulent Mind was born.

Finding Their Roles, Creating Their Rhythm

From day one, balancing creativity and business came naturally to Olivia and Emmi. Each sister brought different strengths to the table — and instead of separating their roles, they learned to blend them seamlessly.

Olivia leaned into creative direction: designing, storytelling, branding, and visually shaping what Turbulent Mind would feel like. Emmi, on the other hand, thrived in structure, logistics, planning, and turning ideas into actual systems and results. They weren’t two founders working separately — they were two halves of one superhuman, constantly balancing each other out.

Their teamwork became a rhythm: when one dreamt big, the other figured out how to make it real. When one created, the other strategized. When chaos hit, they stabilized each other. It’s this balance that keeps the brand grounded yet imaginative — and keeps the dream moving forward.

Growing Through Chaos: The Summer That Changed Everything

This past summer marked a turning point for Turbulent Mind. The brand participated in more events than ever before — from sponsoring major contests like Point Mugu Surf Contest and Super Girl Pro Oceanside, to vending at festivals, markets, and longboard competitions up and down the coast.

The pace was intense. The chaos was constant. And the lessons were endless.

They learned how to refine their booth setup and takedown until it became an art form. They learned how to maximize long days, long drives, and nonstop weeks. They learned how to think fast, problem-solve under pressure, and pivot without panicking.

Most importantly, they learned what they’re capable of.

There were moments this summer where the sisters looked at each other and realized: “We’re really doing this.”

Super Girl Pro, especially, felt like a breakthrough — a WSL event, thousands of people, massive exposure, and a moment that made the brand feel undeniably real.

Another highlight was the Oceanside Longboard Contest, where they got to meet returning customers face-to-face, make new connections, and watch the Turbulent Mind community grow in real time. Those moments — the conversations, the smiles, the shared stories — became the heart of the brand.

Looking Ahead: Winter, New Collections & Bigger Dreams

Winter is far from a “slow season” for Turbulent Mind. In December, the brand is launching new sweatshirts, fresh designs, and its first accessories collection, including hats and tote bags. This new drop is cozy, coastal, and bold — everything winter needs for those living the Turbulent lifestyle.

But behind the scenes, winter is also a time for planning and building. The sisters are already deep into designing next summer’s collections, booking bigger events, preparing new collaborations, and shaping the next chapter of the brand.

If customers thought the past year was impressive, they’ll want to keep their eyes open — because 2026 will be even bigger.

Turbulent Mind will also be popping up at several holiday markets, meeting their community face-to-face and sharing their latest releases in person.

Stepping Into 2026 With Purpose

Heading into the new year, the sisters want their community to feel excited, connected, and unstoppable. Turbulent Mind is more than clothing — it’s a mindset. A culture. A reminder that chaos isn’t something to fear; it’s something to build from.

It’s for the travelers, the surfers, the dreamers, the creatives.
For the people who choose boldness, even when the path isn’t clear.
For the ones rewriting their own stories — even in the messy parts.

Olivia and Emmi see Turbulent Mind not just as a brand, but as a community rooted in adventure, resilience, and shared experience.

Staying Grounded Amid the Chaos

Running a business is chaotic — and the sisters embrace that. But staying grounded is just as important. For them, that anchor is family and faith.

Their family has supported them every step of the way — cheering on their wins, calming their worries, helping load the car, setting up booths, and showing up in every possible way. Their faith keeps them centered, reminds them of their purpose, and helps them navigate the whirlwind with clarity and intention.

A Year Defined — and the Year to Come

If Olivia had to sum up 2025 in one word, it would be unscripted. Nothing went exactly as planned — and that’s what made the year beautiful. The pivots, the twists, the unexpected opportunities… those moments shaped the brand more than any roadmap ever could.

As for 2026, the word is breakthrough.
The sisters believe they’ve broken into the market — now they’re ready to break through into new territories, new opportunities, and new levels of impact.

What They’re Most Proud Of

More than anything, they’re proud of the brand they’ve built together — the events they’ve sponsored, the customers they’ve reached, the news features, the growth, and the moments where they see strangers wearing their designs out in the world.

As individuals, Olivia is especially proud of her growth — balancing graduate school at the University of Florida while building a brand from the ground up. That experience has shaped her into a stronger, clearer, more confident leader, ready to push Turbulent Mind even further when she graduates in April.

Together, the sisters know this is just the beginning.

The Turbulent Road Ahead

Turbulent Mind was born out of creativity, chaos, and the courage to say yes to the unknown. Today, that spirit still drives everything Olivia and Emmi do.

And as they step into the next year — with new collections, new events, new collaborations, and a growing community — one thing is clear:

The turbulence isn’t slowing down.
It’s just starting to rise.
